Dolomites For Beginners: First Steps – FREE VIP RESSOURCE
The Dolomites are the UNESCO world heritage, not for any reason. I believe our beautiful mountains are worth being called one of the most beautiful spots of this earth!
So let’s get to know them and see the first directions!
What And Where Are The Dolomites, And How Do They Work?
What are the Dolomites?
So the Dolomites are not “just mountains” – the Dolomites are in fact a unique kind of mountain and rock that has been discovered in 1789 by a French scientist Déodat de Dolomieu; from whom their name comes from. The Dolomites have indeed a signature form, and they are pretty well recognized at first sight.

Where are the Dolomites?
The Dolomites cover a rather big area (around 100 km radius) in the north-east of Italy. More specifically, the Dolomites’ territory goes from Belluno, Bolzano, Trento, Udine and Pordenone. I live in Alta Badia, so near Bolzano and Belluno. ✌????????
How do they work?
The Dolomites are so not such a big territory, and you can get quickly from one spot to the next. Let’s say, that if you choose to stay in a central area that you like, you can still see other places in the Dolomites as well.
Different areas of the Dolomites
The Dolomites have some areas that are quite different from one another, and you can experience both Austrian and Italian flairs, depending on the area you’re visiting.
Specifically, in South Tyrol, we don’t define ourselves as Italian people and have mostly Austrian influences in terms of living and also buildings. While in the province of Trento, Udine and Pordenone, there’s definitely more of an Italian feel.
I primarily work in the Bolzano and Belluno area – mostly Bolzano, that’s my genius. Here you go with my favourite valleys to stay in, from the most to the least favourite ????
- Alta Badia
- Val Gardena / Gröden
- Val Di Fassa / Fassatal
- Sciliar / Schlern
- Val D’Ega / Eggental
- Sesto / Sexten
How to get here?
The best way to get to the Dolomites is in my opinion the car. As the public transport isn’t the best (especially in winter) you need a lot of time to get up here from any airport. Anyway, I wrote a quite specific piece of guide about this here: Guide To Getting Married In The Dolomites – Everything You Need To Know
How Long to stay?
I highly recommend staying at least 4 days when you’re coming here. Just in case you need to reschedule for whatever reason. So you still have some flexibility for your wedding day and are sure to get the best out of your day!
What do you find in what season & What’s the weather like?
What’s the weather like…? WE DON’T KNOW EITHER, hahaha – I love how tourists ask us for the weather. We really don’t know. It could be amazing, it could be shitty. BUT! I have an interesting curiosity for you: The Dolomites is the sunniest region of the Alps. Does that help? ???????? It’s really uncommon that the weather stays cloudy, rainy or snowy over days. In fact, it changes rather quickly. So you should always be prepared for a sudden change of weather, indeed.
Winter = End of November to April (Temperatures -10°C to 10°C)
You’ll definitely find snow! Usually the first snow comes in the end of November. If you want to come to the Dolomites to this time of the year, you should pack your skis for sure. The beginning of December can also still be with no snow in the landscape. But the slopes are always prepared for skiers!
Spring = Mid-April to Mid-June (Temperatures 15°C to 25°)
Spring is indeed a very tricky season, as we don’t know flourishing plants and trees here hahah. It almost goes straight from snow to meadows. And unfortunately we have quite muddy Aprils here. For this season I highly recommend staying in touch with me, to see how the situation is, and stay flexible for locations.
Summer = June to Mid-September (Temperatures 25°C to 30°C)
Summer isn’t as hot here. If temperatures reach 30°C it’s almost all, and it usually doesn’t happen often that they stay that high for longer than a few days. The summer nights are still cool and lovely to sleep.
Autumn = September to October (Temperatures 20°C to 10°C)
Autumn is definitely my favourite season, as it offers so many wonderful colors! The days are typically blessed with lovely weather and the temperatures are still good. But always take a jacket with you! October might offer you both snow and fierce autumn colors
